The deal marks the first time that an ownership group of one of the four major North American Leagues has crossed over into the world of NASCAR. Fenway Sports Group (FSG) is a subsidiary of New England Sports Ventures, which owns the Red Sox.
Under the deal, Red Sox owner John Henry and the Fenway Sports Group acquired a 50-per-cent-stake in NASCAR’s Roush Racing team. Roush will continue to manage the competitive operations of the race teams president Geoff Smith will continue to oversee business activities.
The team will be known as the Roush Fenway Racing team. Fenway Sports Group will support the team’s marketing and sales activities. FSG specialises in representation, sponsorship sales, event marketing and strategic marketing consulting for corporations who conduct business in sports and entertainment.
