EMIRATES WINS IN ICC-CRICKET AUSTRALIA DISPUTE

Emirates Airlines will be Australia's team sponsor for the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup after Cricket Australia lost out to the International Cricket Council (ICC) in a dispute over sponsorship rights.

The International Cricket Council’s Disputes Resolution Committee ruled against Cricket Australia’s initial decision to appoint Travelex Payments Limited (TPL) as its team sponsor for the tournament.

The ICC refused to approve the deal on the grounds that TPL conflicts with event sponsors VISA and Scotiabank. "The event sponsors had been appointed by the ICC's media rights partner, the Global Cricket Corporation (GCC) which is owned by News International Limited, and had been notified to all teams in June 2006," said an ICC statement.

Cricket Australia had asked for the matter to be referred to the Disputes Resolution Committee, which considered all contracts and correspondence and found that “the ICC's refusal to approve TPL in order to protect the interests of GCC and/or the official event sponsors was correct in all the circumstances."

Already Cricket Australia’s official international airline partner, Emirates will step into the breach, taking over as a team sponsor. Emirates branding will appear on the team uniform and training kit while in the Caribbean. The airline was also the sponsor for the 1999 World Cup team.
