SUPER BOWL TV FIGURES SECOND BIGGEST IN ITS HISTORY

The Indianapolis Colts' victory over the Chicago Bears pulled in the second biggest ever audience for the NFL showpiece – and became the third most-watched US show of all-time.

Sunday’s show on CBS was watched by an average of 93.1m with an audience share of 46.2 percent, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Nielsen adds it believes up to 140m tuned in to at least some of the broadcast – which included a half-time performance by Prince.

All of which will be music to the ears of the big-spending advertisers who paid up to $2.6m for a 30-second slot around the show.

The top Super Bowl broadcast was 94.1m for the 1996 game between the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers; the finale of comedy M*A*S*H the most-watched show.
