ITALY TO DEBATE FOOTBALL FUTURE

The Italian government will meet the Olympic Committee (CONI) today to decide when Italian football will resume.

All matches over the weekend as well as Italy’s international against Romania later this week were cancelled after a policeman was killed during clashes between fans in Sicily.

CONI has urged clubs to end relations with violent fans and could force clubs to adopt stricter anti-hooligan measures. If clubs do not agree to any new guidelines they will not be able to host games.

Italian prime minister Romano Prodi promised "robust" measures to curb the violence.

The incident comes as Serie A and Italian football is slowly recovering from last year’s match-fixing scandal which had a damaging impact on attendances and TV ratings. Only last week, broadcaster Mediaset sued the national football federation, saying the value of TV rights has devalued greatly since the match-fixing scandal.

Italian football brings in estimated revenues of up to €6 billion a year from ticket sales, TV rights, sponsorship, merchandising and betting. Any significant break in football action could see this figure drop.
