COPENHAGEN TO HOST INTERNATIONAL CYCLING EVENTS

The International Cycling Union selected Copenhagen, Denmark to host the Road World Championships 2011, the Track World Championships 2010 and the BMX and Track World Cups in 2008 and 2009.

The package of events is part of a newly developed concept – the UCI Bike City - where the UCI partners team up with a city to promote cycling as a sport and leisure activity. Copenhagen becomes the first UCI Bike City.

“Copenhagen is already known as a bike city as bikes are a favourite choice of transportation for many of our citizens and cycling is one of the top three sports in Denmark in terms of viewer popularity. By hosting a range of international cycling events, we will not only give the Copenhageners and our guests a fantastic experience, but also enhance the message of Copenhagen as a vibrant and innovative partner to the world of sports”, says mayor of culture Mr Martin Geertsen.

During the next five years Copenhagen will work closely with the UCI to strengthen the interest in cycling and cycle sports in Denmark and the rest of the world.

The first event that will take place is the BMX World Cup in 2008 at the city’s BMX facilities.
