KLAMMER TAKES ON SALZBURG 2014 OLYMPIC BID ROLE

Franz Klammer, a five-time World Cup downhill skiing champion, has been appointed as a figurehead for Salzburg's bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Klammer will become the “new face” of the bid after chief executive Fedor Radmann was forced to step down as bid leader for health reasons.

Klammer will not become bid CEO. The position will be advertised and a decision made within a month. In the meantime, the two deputy and executive directors Rudolf Holler and Garnot Leitner will take over the management of the bid committee. Austrian Olympic Committee general secretary Heinz Jungwirth will become more closely associated with the bid.

Salzburg is competing against Sochi, Russia, and PyeongChang, South Korea for the 2014 Winter Games. The IOC evaluation commission starts visiting the cities this month and will be in Salzburg on March 14-17 to review its bid.

Austria Olympic Committee president Leo Wallner said the Salzburg panel plans to make special use of Klammer in its international presentations. "He'll be a charming ambassador," Salzburg deputy governor Wilfried Haslauer said.

Elsewhere, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) received bid books from Chicago and Los Angeles, the two cities under consideration to be selected as the US Applicant City for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
