Schofield will chair a six-man team drawing up a long-term plan designed to formulate a strategy to win back the Ashes after a humiliating defeat in Australia.
Having won the famous urn in 2005, England surrendered it in a 5-0 whitewash, prompting the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to take action.
The committee will include former England Test players Nasser Hussain and Angus Fraser.
During his 30 years in charge of European golf - he retired on December 31, 2004 - Schofield oversaw a dramatic change in fortunes in the Ryder Cup.
England next host Australia in the Ashes in 2009.
