At a London press conference, bid chief executive Dmitry Chernyshenko revealed the assets of Sochi’s Candidature File. His vision is to host a once-in-a-lifetime Games, unique for the quality of the event and for the creation of one of the strongest sporting, social, educational, environmental and economic legacies in the history of the Olympic Movement.
Based on a compact, efficient, technically excellent and realistic plan, with strong government support, the Sochi 2014 Games will have the largest number of brand-new, cutting-edge and fully-accessible venues of any Winter Games. All venues are guaranteed to be complete in time for test events two years prior to the 2014 Winter Games. Olympic and Paralympic athletes were consulted throughout the design phase.
Chernyshenko said the successful London 2012 bid would be used as the model for Sochi 2014.
Construction work has already begun on some infrastructure aspects of these plans, including transport, technology, environment and sport development projects. The redevelopment and renewal of the entire region around Sochi is part of the US$12 billion ‘Federal Target Programme for the Development of Sochi’, guaranteed by the Government of the Russian Federation.
The Sochi 2014 Candidature File, like those of its 2014 rivals Salzburg and PyeongChang, was submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 8 January 2007.
