CLUB FURY AT GOVERNMENT SPONSOR PROBE

The British Government is to investigate whether top soccer clubs should be prevented from being sponsorsed by online gaming sites.

The UK Sports Minister Richard Caborn has instructed the Gambling Commission to probe whether the sponsorships break regulations prohibiting such sites targeting children.

But the move has prompted an angry response from one of the club’s whose first team carry the logo of a gaming site.

Tottenham Hotspur are joined by Blackburn, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa in the Premier League to be backed by online brands.

Its chairman, Daniel Levy, said: “I think it’s ridiculous. This country freely advertises the lottery on TV and billboards. It’s no different.

“What about all the alcohol advertising you get on billboards? I just think it’s nonsense.”
