MLS TEAM STRIKES FIRST SHIRT SPONSORSHIP DEAL

Major League Soccer franchise Real Salt Lake is set to become the first US sports team to sign an individual shirt-sponsorship deal.

Real Salt Lake agreed a deal with drinks company XanGo which, according to reports, is worth between $4 million and $5 million over four years.

Earlier this year Major League Soccer agreed to allow teams to agree individually negotiated shirt-sponsorship deals. Until now all back-of-shirt or short-sponsorship deals have been centrally negotiated by MLS.

Analysts expect other US Major League sports to gradually follow suit and allow individually negotiated deals.
