In 2004, competition between the two pay-operators saw the league bring in a then record €600 million a season TV rights deal with CanalSat aggressively outbidding TPS. That deal runs until the end of the 2007-08 season.
But the two pay-operators have since agreed a merger which is now being opposed by the league, concerned that with only a monopoly pay-broadcaster in the market, it could face a big cut in rights fees next time around.
The league will now discuss with the government the possibility of amending a 2004 decree relating to the sale of its TV rights.
