AFL UNFAZED ON TV RIGHTS

Australian Rules Football’s AFL said that it was unconcerned over ongoing speculation about its TV rights.

It confirmed that negotiations between new broadcast rights holders, free-to-air networks Seven and Ten and pay-operator Foxtel had broken down.

Seven and Ten want to on-sell up to four of the eight games per week to Foxtel in order to refinance their five-year A$780 million deal. They are presently broadcasting every game between them.

There has been ongoing speculation that Seven and Ten could sell some games to the ABC, SBS or even Channel 31 if they could not reach agreement with Foxtel. But the league again made it clear it would be unlikely to approve Channel 31's involvement on the grounds that it is not widely enough available.
