REAL MADRID TV RIGHTS BIDDING WAR

Tagged in , &

Spanish Primera Liga club Real Madrid’s TV rights are the subject of a bidding war between Rupert Murdoch, pay-operator Sogecable, free-to-air network Telemadrid and the MediaPro agency.

The club said it is set to sign a new deal for its rights that guarantees it €800 million over seven seasons. It will be signed in the next few days.

Real's TV rights are currently owned by Sogecable, through Audiovisual Sport, which also holds the rights for most of the Primera Liga and second division clubs. Sogecable pays €55 million a year in a deal that runs until 2008, but Sogecable has the option to extend it for a further year by paying €60 million.

At the beginning of November, publicly-run regional television station Telemadrid said it would bid for Real's TV rights, backed by bank Caja Madrid.

According to Spanish sports daily AS, from the beginning of the 2008/9 season Telemadrid have offered an average of €115 million per year, starting at €75 million in the first season and rising progressively to 125 million euros.
