Rakhimov withdrew in a letter to IOC President Jacques Rogge and expressed his support for C.K. Wu of Chinese Taipei. The incumbent Anwar Chowdhry, 83, is seeking a sixth term in office.
Rakhimov, a businessman and sports leader from Uzbekistan, said in his letter that the leadership of the AIBA is "not willing for any changes to be made” and “is bringing this Olympic sport to a deadlock.”
The IOC last year notified the AIBA that its share of TV revenues from the 2004 Athens Games was being suspended until reforms were carried out involving scoring and selection of judges. These are scheduled to be considered at the AIBA Congress in Santo Domingo in November. The presidential election takes place at the same meeting.
