DISCOVERY CHANNEL IN CYCLING TALKS

The Discovery Channel has reportedly begun negotiations to renew its $10 million to $15 million-a-year sponsorship of its US-based road cycling team.

Discovery has sponsored the team, then lead by of seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, since 2004 in a three-year deal that expires at the end of the 2007 season.

Despite allegations of drug taking hitting the 2006 Tour and cycling in general a spokesperson for Discovery said, "the deal has given us tremendous value. We have an incredible relationship with CSE [Capital Sports & Entertainment, which manages and co-owns the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team.]. We are negotiating now."

Part of Discovery’s original reason for the sponsorship was to heighten its cable network businesses in Europe and other non-US territories, using European-based cycling professionals on the team.
