AUSTRALIAN GP LOSES TOBACCO EXEMPTION

From October 1, the Australian Health Minister no longer has the discretion to grant international and cultural sporting events an exemption from the country's tobacco advertising prohibition laws.

The move means a total tobacco advertising ban for all sports comes into place from this month.

Since 1992, when the original tobacco sponsorship ban came into force in the country, the federal health minister has had the power to exempt international events, such as the annual Melbourne Formula One grand prix. The Australian grand prix may come under funding pressure as a result of the change in exempt status.
