Australia wants to host the 2010 women's basketball world championships as the sport tries to capitalise on the team’s rise to the top of the international game.
Discussions are being held about tabling a bid to FIBA, basketball’s world governing body, at the end of the year to host the 2010 world titles. Australia last staged the event in 1994.
Basketball Australia (BA) would back the bid. The sport is expanding in Australia with the National Basketball League adding new teams and securing a naming-rights sponsor and there is speculation a free-to-air television deal may soon be struck to support Fox Sports ongoing coverage.
