DRINK FIRM SPONSORSHIPS ATTACKED

The UK's Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs has recommended that drinks companies should be banned from sponsoring sports and music events in the UK.

The advisers point to what they say is "irresponsible advertising and poor education" for a surge in binge drinking in the UK and want alcohol advertising on TV, the Internet and in cinemas to be banned.

A ban on sports advertising in the UK could hit a number of top sports events including the Stella Artois tennis tournament and rugby union's Heineken Cup and Guinness Premiership.
