The draft National Sport and Recreation Amendment Bill which is before the South African parliament seeks to enable the Minister of Sport and Recreation to intervene in the management of sport bodies.
Afriforum handed a petition to National Assembly, warning that the charters of FIFA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) both prohibit political interference in sport.
It also pointed to the fact that FIFA suspended the Greek Football Federation from participation in international football in July, 2006 as a result of the Greek government's interference in the governance of the sport. FIFA indicated that football structures alone should take decisions on football issues and be independent from government involvement.
