FOXTEL SAYS MEDIA REFORMS MUST ADDRESS ANTI-SIPHONING

Australian pay-TV broadcaster Foxtel said incoming media reforms must include tough "use it or lose it" rules to prevent free-TV channels hoarding sports events they have no intention of covering.

The Australian government has said it will introduce a use it or lose it system for listed sports events as part of wider media reforms to be introduced to parliament later this week. But it has also said it will keep in place a “core” anti-siphoning regime well into the future.

Foxtel said the new legislation must remove existing loopholes that free-TV channels had exploited for years. The media reform Bill will go before parliament on Thursday, with the aim of passing the legislation next month.
