ARU TO LAUNCH NEW CLUB TOURNAMENT

The Australian Rugby Union has approved the formation of an eight-team national club competition.

The tournament, which will start in July 2007, will be a tier under the Super 14 and one above the club competitions in Sydney and Brisbane.

The ARU is hoping the new competition will create a pathway for players to make it into Australia's four Super 14 franchises. Sydney will have three teams in the competition, Queensland will have two, while Canberra, Perth and Melbourne will each host one team.
