TURKS IN DOCK OVER PODIUM CEREMONY

Reports suggest the future of the F1 Turkish Grand Prix may be in doubt after an alleged breech of protocol at the weekend’s race.

Organisers have been summoned by the governing body after Turkish-Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat presented the winner's trophy to Felipe Massa last Sunday. This has embarrassed the non-political FIA.

The Turkish-controlled area of northern Cyprus is not recognised as a separate country by the United Nations.

Cyprus has been split since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded the northern part of the Mediterranean island after a Greek-inspired coup.

The Greek-Cypriot controlled south is the internationally recognised government, representing the whole island in forums such as the European Union. The Turkish federation Tosfed and race organisers MSO have been called to a special meeting of the FIA's world motorsport council where they will face charges of breaching FIA and Formula One rules.

In 1997 the Spanish circuit of Jerez was barred from hosting Formula One races after the town's mayor disrupted a podium ceremony.
