FA BOSS HITS BACK OVER WEMBLEY HOLD UPS

The chief executive of English soccer’s Football Association has distanced the governing body from blame for the on-going delays in the building of the new Wembley Stadium in London.

Brian Barwick says the FA has suffered ‘misplaced criticism’ despite the new £757m stadium running almost a year behind schedule.

It had been hoped the 2006 FA Cup final would be staged at the venue – but there are now doubts it will be completed in time for the 2007 final.

Barwick said: “I understand we are open to some degree of criticism, I would say misplaced criticism.

“We are waiting for the builders to hand over the keys - we're not building the stadium, Multiplex is."
