TOKYO GETS OLYMPIC NOD

Tokyo has been selected by the Japanese Olympic Committee to battle it out as the nation’s bid city for the 2016 Olympic Games.

It beat off rival city Fukuoka by 33 votes to 22 after presentations from both cities were put before JOC members.

Tokyo last hosted the Games back in 1964. It will face tough challenges from cities from the US, India, Brazil and Spain in bidding for the event. The final decision is due in 2009.

Beijing hosts the 2008 Games and London will host the 2012 event.
