The massive volunteer recruitment programme for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games has begun.

Organisers of the Games in the Chinese city are looking to hire 100,000 volunteers to help stage the Games and Paralympics; an increasingly vital part of staging major sporting events.

IOC president Jacques Rogge said: “An Olympic Games stands no chance of success without a team of well-trained volunteers and high-standard voluntary services.”

The bid to find the necessary helpers to assist with the running of the Games got underway on Monday. Many of those expected to assist will be students.
