BARCELONA BOARD RESIGNS AHEAD OF ELECTION

The board of Spanish Primera Liga club FC Barcelona resigned in order to set in motion a presidential election at the club.

The ballot to elect the new president is expected to take place on September 10 and an interim board led by economist Xavier Sala y Martin will take charge of the club during the presidential election campaign.

Incumbent president Joan Laporta and his board resigned as ordered by a Spanish judge last week. The judge upheld a complaint from three club members that Laporta had already served his four-year tenure.

But a bid through the courts to prevent Laporta from standing for re-election for breaking the club statutes was thrown out. He will now present himself for re-election and it is unclear if he will be challenged.
