AUSTRALIAN REGULATOR EXAMINES SPORTS DEALS

Australia's competition regulator said it would examine exclusive sports content deals in the internet sector.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said that in the area of sports rights content can be accumulated and aggregated in fewer hands through exclusive rights agreements.

The move comes as the country’s National Rugby League negotiates the sale of its internet rights. Leading telecoms firm Telstra, which has held the National Rugby rights since 2001, has passed on an exclusive window to re-sign a five-year rights package for about $40 million. But it can still obtain the package by matching any deals negotiated with rival parties by the NRL.
