SPANISH FOOTBALL APPROVES FRANCHISES

Spanish football’s governing bodies signed an agreement that paves the way for American-style sporting franchises to operate in their leagues.

The Spanish Football Federation and the Football League approved proposals that would allow a club to sell its right to compete in the league to another club. The move came as part of a wider ranging co-operation agreement between the federation and the league clearly outlining each body’s specific areas of responsibility. The agreement runs until 2010.

The move means that a club will also be able to move from one city/town to another without affecting its right to participate in the league.
