Juventus, Lazio and Fiorentina have been relegated into Serie B with points deductions while AC Milan remains in Serie A, but with a points deduction. All are banned from European football. The appeals are likely to argue that the sports tribunal failed to give the accused clubs the means to defend themselves by banning witness and video evidence and that the sanctions handed down are disproportionate to the crime. But the prosecutor Stefano Palazzi will press for even harsher punishments.
The sports tribunal opened on June 29 and delivered its verdicts on July 14. The appeals process is expected to move much faster but is unlikely to finish by July 25, the deadline set by Uefa for the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to submit the list of teams to compete in next season's European club competitions.
If the appeals process remains incomplete by July 25, the Italian federation said its list would reflect the verdicts of the sports tribunal, meaning Roma, Chievo and Palermo would take the places of Juventus, Milan and Fiorentina in the Champions League.
