AUSTRALIA MAY BID FOR 2018 WORLD CUP

Tagged in , &

Australian Prime Minister John Howard said that should the Football Federation of Australia put in a bid for the 2018 World Cup the country’s local governments would support the bid very enthusiastically.

The national government and the heads of the eight state and territory governments discussed the possibility of bidding for the right to host the tournament at their annual meeting. Australian officials are already considering bidding to host the 2011 Asian Cup as part of a long-term plan to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022.

Football is cresting a wave of popularity in Australia after the national team, the Socceroos, reached the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany for the first time in 32 years.
