FOX SPORTS AND BASEBALL SET TO RENEW TV CONTRACT

Tagged in &

US Major League Baseball is set to renew its TV rights deal with Fox Sports. Under the new seven-year agreement Fox Sports will retain the Saturday game of the week, the All-Star Game and the World Series rights.

But Fox is likely to retain the rights for only one League Championship Series. It wanted to cut the $417 million a year rights fee it pays now in a six-year deal that ends in September 2006, by dropping the remaining divisional series matches.

Cable broadcaster TBS is expected to acquire a new game-of-the-week package including the rights for all division series matches that have been shared by Fox and fellow cable broadcaster ESPN. TBS and ESPN are also both interested in acquiring the remaining League Championship Series, not retained by Fox.
