ITALY COULD LOSE OUT WITH EURO 2012 BID

Italy is in danger of losing its bid to host the 2012 European Championships as a result of the Serie A match-fixing scandal.

It is thought that unless the management committee of the Italian football Federation is completely re-organised, Italy cannot be awarded the tournament. Both the federation president Franco Carraro and vice-president Innocenzo Mazzini are implicated in the scandal and Carraro has resigned his post. Guido Rossi, an emergency administrator, is running the federation.

The decision on the 2012 host country will be taken on December 8, 2006 after site visits, giving the Italy time to restructure and appoint a new figurehead. Italy is bidding against joint-bids from Poland/Ukraine and Hungary/Croatia.
