Construction work on Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, which is undergoing a major refurbishment ahead of the event, had fallen behind schedule.
It is due to host the opening fixture between the West Indies and Pakistan, as well as one of the semi-finals.
But now both venue development manager of the Jamaica Local Organising Committee (LOC), Chris Smith, and ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies 2007 Inc. venue development director, Donald Lockerbie, have confirmed that the stadium is now just a week behind schedule and should gain further ground in the coming weeks.
Said Smith: “Teamwork and staying focused on the job at hand has allowed us to make up significant ground in recent weeks and we are very pleased with the facility and the current pace of construction.
“It has been rough going over the past few months. We have had our challenges but we have remained committed and focused on the deadline. Our contractors are now displaying a high level of commitment and dedication and we are continuing to support each other.”
Work on the venue will be accelerated following the fourth and final Test between the West Indies and India in July.
Added Smith: “The November 2006 deadline is certainly achievable.”
Organisers of next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup say that work on the venue which will host the tournament’s opening match is back on track.
