WILL SETANTA TAP FREEVIEW MARKET?

Irish TV channel Setanta says it has not ruled out showing live English Premiership soccer via the Freeview digital service as of 2007.

Setanta won two of the 23-match packages up for grabs on Friday – leaving rival Sky with the remaining four.

Currently available only via Sky Digital and NTL, channel chiefs say they are considering adding Freeview.

Such a move would mean their games are available to the widest range of digital TV customers. If it is on Freeview viewers would be able to access the matches by signing up to the platform’s Top Up TV pay-TV service.

Speaking to MediaGuardian, Richard Brooke, Setanta director of corporate development, said: “We are looking at Freeview distribution. It is a possibility but it is very early days.”
Setanta, who hold live TV rights to the Scottish Premier League, currently charge viewers £7 a match of £14 a month for access to the games.
Meanwhile, Sky have confirmed all the games in their package will be made available to subscribers of their sports package – effectively ending the pay-TV service, Premiership Plus.
Setanta paid £392m for the two packages which run from 2007-2010. Sky paid £1.3bn for the remaining four.
