The corporation’s director general Mark Thompson said the BBC – which has seen both Channel 4 and Sky capture the rights since they last broadcast live action in 1999 – will ‘look closely’ at the rights when they next come up for tender in 2009.
Thompson said: “I thought that in the last round the amount the England & Wales Cricket Board were asking for the rights was very high.
“Now I think we should look very closely at cricket again.”
The sport has enjoyed huge renewed interest since last summer’s Ashes series which saw England triumph over old foe Australia in what was described as one of the most exciting series of all time.
The rights to home England internationals are currently held by Sky in a deal which runs from 2006 to 2009.
UK terrestrial broadcaster the BBC has hinted it may look to once again capture the rights to England cricket action when they next come for up for grabs.
