FUKUOKA ENTERS 2016 OLYMPIC RACE

The race to become the candidate city for Japan for the 2016 Olympic Games has stepped up after Fukuoka confirmed it wanted to stage the event.

The southern city will now go head-to-head with Tokyo to be chosen as the Japanese city to make a formal bid for the Games.

The Japanese Olympic Committee is expected to chose its bidding city at the end of August.

A final IOC decision on the host city will be made in 2009.
