WARNING TO CONSTRUCTORS AHEAD OF CRICKET WORLD CUP

Constructors working on Jamaica's $29million Sabina Park upgrade ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 have been put on notice to complete their work on time.

The Board of Directors of Jamaica Cricket 2007, the local organising committee, issued a stern warning to Ashtrom Building Systems regarding its performance to date and admitted they had little confidence in its commitment to complete the project in accordance with its contractual obligations.

The Board also dismissed a request for an extension of the completion date to February 2007 from October 31, 2006.

In reaching the decision, the Board rejected the basis for the delays except for those relating specifically to a cement shortfall.

The Board also required Ashtrom to submit the long overdue construction schedule by April 18, 2006 and to furnish a schedule of interim deliverables to enable a fortnightly assessment of their progress

The company was further warned that any failure to deliver in accordance with the schedule would constitute immediate grounds for damages.

A request for an increase in the contract sum of $1.75million was also dismissed as, with the exception of cement problem, the Board said the earlier agreed extension of six months from April to October 31, 2006, incorporated all the other issues causing delay cited by Ashtrom.
