SKY THE LIMIT AGAIN FOR PREMIER LEAGUE?

Tagged in &

Free-to-air terrestrial UK TV broadcasters winning any of the next Premier League soccer packages could be forced to shell out even more to compensate for ‘leakage’ of coverage to mainland Europe.

That’s according to two top analysts from investment bank UBS in an investment note.

And they believe BSkyB will once again look to win all six rights packages – selling on the least desirable to another operator. That despite European pressure to ensure the packages are never again sold exclusively to one rightsholder.

Daniel Kerven and Ian Whittaker are reported in The Guardian as saying: “Sky's intention is likely to take the maximum five packages.
“We believe BSkyB could bid for all six packages and, if it won, sell the least favourable package to a new entrant.”
The note also said a six percent levy would be charged to terrestrial broadcasters for the so-called ‘leakage’ caused by overseas viewers accessing the coverage.
For Sky to buy all six packages would cost up to three percent more, say the analysts, than they last paid – a cool £1.024bn.
