CLUBS WANT A SLICE OF THE WORLD CUP

Manchester United’s CEO, David Gill, has again called for compensation for clubs releasing players for international duty.

Such a measure goes beyond the G14’s current demand for associations or federations to take out insurance to cover injuries to players on international duty.

It would involve diverting some of the large sums of money, which FIFA and UEFA currently make from TV rights and sponsorship deals for prestigious competitions such as the World Cup and European Championships, directly to the clubs who provide the players for national teams.

“We believe that our players are the assets providing the income," said Gill, speaking at Soccerex London Forum. "The belief of the clubs is that the assets providing these profits are being paid for by the clubs.”
