Svetlana Zhurova, the speed skating veteran and a Torino 2006 gold medalist, will join the Sochi 2014 Bid Committee in an executive role as athlete relations director.
She will help Sochi 2014 develop a plan that aims to have athletes and their families at its heart.
It is also hoped she will engage fellow Russian athletes to become bid ambassadors.
Dmitry Chernyshenko, the CEO of Sochi 2014, said: "With her experience and talent, she will bring to the bid the unique perspective of a veteran Olympic champion who has continued to stay at the top of her game and win for 12 years since her first Winter Games.”
