RECORD ENTRIES FOR ATHLETICS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The IAAF says a record number of countries have declared an interest to host the 2011 World Championships in Athletics.

Nine countries from five continents (Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania) have submitted bids, with the winner to be chosen by the IAAF Council in Spring 2007.

Said IAAF president Lamine Diack: "Having 50 per cent more candidates than ever before for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, where more than 200 Member Federations compete, demonstrates the current value of athletics, and the great attraction of the Worlds as a major sporting event."
