POUND AND ROGGE FACE LEGAL WRANGLE

Tagged in &

A major row is brewing after the legal representative of Austrian ski coach Walter Mayer vowed to launch a lawsuit against IOC president Jacques Rogge.

Mayer’s lawyer has already filed a defamation case against Dick Pound – president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) – alleging he made false claims of blood doping during the recent Turin Winter Olympic Games.

The coach had been banned from the Games following similar claims at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, but travelled to the Italian city, only to flee after police raided the Austrian team’s quarters. Mayer subsequently crashed his car into a police road block.

Now the mayor of Salzburg has entered the dispute – calling for Mayer to scrap the legal action to avoid causing lasting damage to the city’s hopes of hosting the 2014 Winter Games.
Mayor Heinz Schaden said: “Mayer is really stirring things up with this action. It is not beneficial to our Olympic bid.”
The lawsuit against Rogge is due to be filed today in Vienna’s district court.
