Wheeler, 43, brings a wealth of sports industry knowledge and experience to BSI and is currently chairman of Copyright Promotions Group - the pan-European licensing and merchandising agency.
John Postlethwaite, chief executive, BSI, said: “Whilst our World Speedway business has been growing rapidly in the last six years, there are many other assets within the company that remain underdeveloped and Matthew’s vision and strategic skills should help us to grow these elements of our business at a much faster pace.”
In the 1990s Wheeler was chief executive of Alan Pascoe’s API Group and in 1997 he played a leading role in the sale of API to the New York-based, marketing and communications group Interpublic.
He then became managing director of Octagon Worldwide, the sports and event marketing division of Interpublic, before resigning at the end of 2001.
