BROWN TO BACK BRITISH ATHLETES IN BUDGET

Chancellor Gordon Brown is set to pledge more than £30million a year in today's Budget to help Britain’s Olympic athletes.

He is to announce a “substantial” upfront sum from the Treasury to help to pay for high-quality facilities, training and support for athletes taking career breaks as they prepare for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The money will not be dependent on matching funds from the private sector but Mr Brown will urge companies to follow his lead and come up with sponsorship deals, reports The Times newspaper.

As for England possibly staging the football World Cup in 2018, Mr Brown will announce a doubling of funding for the National Sports Foundation, which begins work this week to build up youth football and grassroots sport across the country. It will bring funding up to £35million over two years.
