WEMBLEY'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL BID

The new Wembley Stadium is bidding to host the 2008 Champions League final.

The venue faces competition from eight other stadia to land European football’s showpiece event.

A UEFA spokesman said sites would be examined between April and June ahead of the final decision in October.

Germany, Italy and Portugal have lodged two bids each, with grounds in Russia and Spain completing the list.

Yesterday the unfinished stadium was evacuated and construction workers sent home after an incident involving the roof of the arena.

Earlier this month, the Football Association was forced to announce this season’s FA Cup final would be played at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, after construction company Multiplex could not guarantee that the £757million (stadium would be ready for May 13.
