UN BACKS GREEN OLYMPICS

Turin may have shown the way to an "environmentally friendly Winter Olympics" says the head of the U.N. Environment Program.

UNEP executive director Klaus Toepfer said the concentration of venues in the city of Turin rather than the mountains was a positive step, reports aroundtherings.com

"By locating in the city centre several key events, such as figure skating or ice hockey, along with accommodation for athletes and the media, the organisers have dramatically increased the likelihood that these buildings and structures will be sustainably used in the future for sports, other leisure activities and housing," he said.

Toepfer, who visited Turin to make his own inspection during the Olympics, says the city-mountain split between venues is best for the environment.

However, he was concerned about some of the facilities such as the bobsleigh track in Cesana, questioning how sustainable “a huge fridge in the mountains” might be.

The U.N. agency says it wants to work closely with international federations and sports bodies "to ensure that the environment is factored into sporting events from the outset".
