RFU FINALLY PAYS UP FOR LIONS PLAYERS

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has conceded defeat in its battle over payments to clubs that fielded Lions players.

The union agreed to release the £148,000 due to Premiership clubs that used players last September, despite this being during an 11-week rest period.

Premier Rugby, which represents the clubs, accused the RFU of wasting an estimated £500,000 in legal bills.

The RFU and Premier Rugby last month agreed that the Long Form Agreement - the blueprint which deals with England's access to players - holds firm until 2007.

Both sides are looking beyond 2007 and to more productive discussions under the guise of England Rugby Ltd, their joint venture.

The RFU want to reach an agreed season structure with Premier Rugby that will benefit both the clubs and England.

The RFU want to block the season off into sections, with international players available to England only over the autumn Tests and the Six Nations Championship.
