COPENHAGEN WINS 2009 OLYMPICS MEETINGS

The Danish capital of Copenhagen has won the vote to host the 2009 IOC Session and Congress, defeating Cairo in a head-to-head vote in Turin.

Seven cities were candidates in the election, with Athens eliminated in the first round of voting and Riga in the second round.

A tie-breaker between Singapore and Taipei after the third round of voting dropped Singapore from the race. On the fourth round, Taipei was eliminated. Busan went in the fifth round.

The 2009 meetings will be high-profile events on the IOC calendar, drawing Olympic experts by the thousands for several days of meetings and presentations, reports aroundtherings.com

A city to host the 2016 Summer Olympics will be chosen, and changes to the summer programme will be considered.

There will also be an election for a new four-year term for the IOC president, if Jacques Rogge decides to continue his mandate. If he chooses to step down the meeting will decide a successor.
