MCG SELL-OUT FOR SOCCEROOS WARM-UP

Australia football officials predict a 100,000 sell-out crowd when the national team plays a World Cup warm-up against European champions Greece at the revamped Melbourne Cricket Ground on May 25.

Greece failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals but are still certain to be a major drawcard for the game, as Melbourne is home to a huge expatriate Greek community.

Four of the Socceroos' biggest matches in the next four years are to be played at the MCG.

Following the Greece match, the venue will also host another Socceroos' friendly international against a top-line nation in mid-2007.

In 2008 and 2009 the stadium will host World Cup qualifiers, including Australia's first since joining the Asian Football Confederation.

Local media see the decision as a coup for the Victorian Major Events Corporation after last year's historic World Cup qualifying victory against Uruguay took place at Telstra Stadium in Sydney.

"We are an Australian organisation, and we need to make sure that other cities also get a fair go," said Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy.

"But for this big game and other big games I think Melbourne is running in front of many others."
