EUROLEAGUE NETS NEW MEDIA DEALS

Euroleague Basketball has reached agreements for mobile and broadband coverage in Cyprus and Lithuania.

Lithuanian telecoms company Omnitel will broadcast games via mobile handsets supporting streaming and 2.5G mobile packet data transmission.

Euroleague has also signed a contract with the CYTA in Cyprus to broadcast games via internet over ADSL and IPTV connections.

Andrea Bassani, TV director at Euroleague Basketball, said: "The new media market and its associated technologies offer great opportunities for sports organisations, and from our position of managing our commercial rights in-house, we consider it a high priority to move forward in this market, as soon as possible, in order to better understand the prospects for the future.

"Omnitel Lithuania, in the mobile telephone market, and CYTA in Cyprus, with their penetration into the internet sector, both offer us the possibility to gather interesting data for analysis and preliminary estimates about the economic viability that these commercial rights have in the European market."
